Your first session, step by step.

Starting dialysis is a big change. Here is exactly what happens, and what to bring so your first day is calm.

    1. Get a recommendation

A doctor or nephrologist assesses you and recommends dialysis. No referral yet? Book a consultation with Dr. Wala.

    2. Prepare your access

A surgeon creates access to your bloodstream: an AV fistula (the gold standard), an AV graft, or a temporary catheter for urgent cases.

    3. Book your slots

Choose a branch and two weekly sessions. We confirm on WhatsApp or by phone. A request is not booked until we confirm it.

    4. Settle in

Four hours in an electric recliner, with breakfast, lunch, TV and Wi-Fi. Your nurse checks on you throughout.

    What to bring

    0 of 6 ready

All documents must be less than 4 weeks old, from a recognised hospital or laboratory.

You're ready. Bring these on your first day and we'll take it from there.

    Kidney life

    Living well between sessions.

Small habits make dialysis days easier. Your nephrologist and nutritionist will tailor all of this to you.

    Fluids

    Why your fluid limit matters

Between sessions, extra fluid builds up in your body. Your nephrologist sets your limit, usually under 1 litre a day.

    Fluids & diet questions
    Diet

    Foods to go easy on

Limit phosphorus (dairy, cola, nuts, processed food) and potassium (bananas, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes). Keep protein moderate.

    Good to know.

Can't find your answer? Our renal team is happy to talk it through, day or night at Kimuka.

Does SHA cover dialysis? How do I pay?
SHA fully covers two haemodialysis sessions a week for eligible beneficiaries. We also accept major accredited insurers, cards, cash, cheques and M-Pesa. Payment is required before each session.
What do I need before starting haemodialysis?
A surgeon must first create secure access to your bloodstream:
    • AV fistula, the gold standard: an artery joined to a vein. It needs time to mature.
    • AV graft, a synthetic tube when vessels are unsuitable for a fistula.
    • Catheter, a temporary option for urgent cases while permanent access heals.
Will dialysis cure my kidney disease?
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment, not a cure. The only definitive treatment for end-stage kidney disease is a successful transplant, and we coordinate pre-transplant work-up for eligible patients. Whether kidneys can recover depends on the cause; our nephrologist will advise on your outlook.
    Does dialysis hurt?
The session itself is not painful. Most patients find needle insertion easier to tolerate over time, and our nurses keep you as comfortable as possible throughout.
Can I still work or travel?
Yes. Sessions are twice a week on agreed days, leaving the rest of your week free. If you travel, we can help coordinate care at partner dialysis centres.
What diet and fluid limits will I have?
Typical guidance, which your nephrologist will tailor:
    • Fluids usually under 1 litre a day between sessions
    • Limit phosphorus: dairy, cola, nuts and processed foods
    • Limit potassium: bananas, oranges, potatoes and tomatoes
    • Moderate protein, as advised
Outside food and drinks are generally not allowed during in-centre sessions. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
    When are you open?
    • CKS Hospital Kimuka: 24 hours, 7 days a week, including public holidays
    • Pangani and Buruburu: Monday to Saturday, 6am to 6pm
    • Aga Khan Doctor's Plaza: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
